Popping Your Back and Joints: Is It Safe?

Girl popping and cracking her neck

When the joint within your spine makes a popping sound, this is actually the air being released from that joint. Your spine has 24 Vertebra and joint on either side of most vertebra, quite a lot of articulations or two bones creating a joint. As shown below the back of your spine, this is where there are joints. In the front you have discs that act like shock absorbers in between the vertebra.

As you can tell these joint move in all directions including forward, backward, side to side and rotation. When the joint is stretched to near maximal movement air from the joint releases causing a pop. popping of the joint is ok.

Three Reasons to Not Pop Your Joints

  1. Excessive Neck Rotation – To much neck rotation is not normal and put to much torque on this part of the spine causing possible injury.

  2. Excessive Bending Forward and Twisting of the Low Back – Everyone’s spine has a weak area in the low back. This area lies slightly posterior to the disc on the left and right side. Bending forward , twisting and picking something heavy up can push the disc backward causing Sciatica or Discogenic pain. You may hear a pop, not Good.

  3. Continuously Popping a Joint When There is Pain – The joint may be faulty and you are probably making it worse.
